Overview
The Garmin 010-10856-20 is a replacement VHF antenna for the DC 40 dog-tracking collar, used to keep the collar communicating with a compatible Garmin Astro handheld tracking system.
The DC 40 collar operates on MURS VHF channels at 151.82, 151.88, 151.94, 154.57, and 154.60 MHz with a 2 W output, and the overall system is rated up to 7 miles (11.2 km) line of sight. If an antenna is cracked, missing, or has a loose connection, tracking range and update consistency are often the first things to drop off.
This is a collar accessory, not a marine VHF radio antenna. It will not connect to a boat VHF, AIS, or any NMEA network.
Key features
- Direct replacement antenna for the Garmin DC 40 dog-tracking collar.
- Matches the DC 40 collar’s MURS-band VHF link (151.82, 151.88, 151.94, 154.57, and 154.60 MHz).
- Supports the DC 40 system’s 2 W VHF transmission and up to 7 miles (11.2 km) line-of-sight rating, with real-world range depending on terrain and obstructions.
- Installs at the collar’s VHF antenna port using the collar’s weather cap and screw hardware.
- Once installed, the collar is re-secured with its mounting plate and screws, and the antenna is re-tied to the collar strap to prevent snagging.
- Helps reduce signal problems caused by a damaged antenna or a worn antenna connection on an otherwise functioning collar.
Installation and setup
To replace the antenna, detach the DC 40 module from the collar strap, then remove the weather cap and screw from the VHF antenna. Remove the old antenna, align the new antenna with the DC 40, and reinstall the screw and weather cap.
Reattach the mounting plate and screws, then replace the zip tie that secures the antenna to the collar strap. Trim the zip tie and any sharp edges so it does not rub the dog or catch on gear.
Compatibility and fit
Compatibility is specific: this antenna is for the Garmin DC 40 dog-tracking collar. It is not an upgrade for a marine VHF radio and it does not share fittings with standard marine VHF antennas.
For best tracking performance, treat the VHF link like any other line-of-sight radio. Keeping the handheld and the dog’s collar as unobstructed as possible matters more than small changes in settings or mounting position.
Use on board
This replacement makes sense for boaters who rely on a DC 40 collar to track a dog while anchored, docked, or running shore hunts from a skiff, and need the collar’s VHF link working the way it should. It is also a practical spare to keep in the gear bag when a collar antenna gets snagged, chewed, or broken mid-season.
Maintenance and care
After exposure to spray, mud, or salt, rinse the collar exterior with fresh water and let it dry before storage. Check that the weather cap is seated and that the antenna is still secured to the strap so the connector does not work loose from repeated vibration or snagging.
