Overview

The Vimar VM08336 is a 230 V~ rotary dimmer module for onboard AC lighting circuits, rated 50-60 Hz with 60-900 W resistive loads and 60-300 VA ferromagnetic transformers.

It is made for incandescent and halogen lamps, and it can also dim extra-low voltage halogen lighting when that lighting is fed through a ferromagnetic transformer. The rotary control includes a locator light that stays visible in the dark.

This is an IP40 device intended for dry, protected interior locations on a boat. Operating temperature is -5 °C to +35 °C, and the body depth is 51.50 mm, so it is worth checking clearance behind the panel before you commit to the cutout and wiring.

Key features
  • 230 V~ (50-60 Hz) dimming for AC lighting circuits
  • Load ratings: 60-900 W resistive loads and 60-300 VA ferromagnetic transformers
  • Rotary potentiometer control with locator light visible in darkness
  • Flush-mounted installation with snapper fastening
  • Thermoplastic body with untreated matt surface, white (RAL 9001 similar)
  • IP40 protection rating for dry interior mounting
  • Device height 45.00 mm and depth 51.50 mm for planning panel clearance
  • Not suitable for installation on table mounting box 09933
  • Without radio interference suppression filter
Compatibility and fit

This dimmer is part of the Vimar 8000 family and is meant to be flush-mounted behind the matching frames and plates used in that series. Before ordering trim parts, confirm your existing modules are from the same family so the dimmer seats and snaps in correctly.

For refits, pay attention to depth. At 51.50 mm, tight bulkheads and shallow console panels can run out of space once wiring bends are added. It is also explicitly not suitable for installation on table mounting box 09933.

Installation and wiring notes

This is a 230 V AC device, so it belongs on vessels with 230 V lighting circuits fed by shore power and or an inverter. Isolate power at the breaker before working on the circuit.

Wiring can be done phase to neutral or phase to phase, always in series with the load. When dimming through a ferromagnetic transformer, the transformer connects to the dimmer on the primary side, and the load on the secondary side should be an ohmic load. A light transformer buzz around mid-dim settings can be normal, and the line between transformer and load should not be switched.

The dimmer does not provide a full off state in the main circuit, so the load side must be treated as live until the circuit is properly disconnected upstream.

Use on board

This is a good match for cabins, salons, and nav stations where you want smooth control of incandescent or halogen lighting on 230 V circuits, including low-voltage halogen runs that use ferromagnetic transformers. In exposed areas like cockpits and washdown zones, the IP40 rating means it should be placed inside a protected enclosure rather than left open to spray.

Quality Boat Parts is a reseller. Many items include a manufacturer’s warranty, and all warranty service is handled directly by the manufacturer. We do not manage or administer warranty claims on behalf of customers.

Warranty terms, coverage, and duration are set by each manufacturer. Issues involving defects, repairs, or replacements must be addressed with the manufacturer’s support team. When available, the warranty period is listed on the product page. If it is not shown, contact us or the manufacturer for details before purchasing.

To start a claim, the customer must contact the manufacturer and follow their process. Keep your proof of purchase and original packaging, and register the product if the manufacturer requires it, as these are often needed for warranty service.

We are happy to help you find the right contact or documentation, but we cannot decide outcomes or intervene in claim resolutions. For guidance, email cs@qualityboatparts.com.
