Overview

The Perko 0420 Fog Bell is a medium-weight cast bronze bell for vessels under 20 meters, built for use as an audible sound signal in fog, restricted visibility, or anchorage situations where a clear manual signal is required.

This series is offered in 6" and 8" bottom diameters, with overall heights of 5" or 6-1/8" depending on size. It has a removable bell design and uses #8 F.H. screw mounting, giving boat owners a traditional bronze bell that can be fitted on a bulkhead, cabin side, pilothouse area, or other suitable onboard mounting point with proper backing.

The bell has been reviewed by the U.S. Coast Guard for C.G. 169 sound signal appliance requirements under Annex III, Paragraph 2 of the '72 COLREGS, for use on vessels under 20 meters in length.

Key features
  • Cast bronze bell body for traditional marine sound signaling and long service around saltwater hardware.
  • Medium-weight construction, with a 3.8 lb carton ship weight for the 6" size and an 8.7 lb carton ship weight for the 8" size.
  • Removable bell design helps with service access, cleaning, and seasonal maintenance.
  • Available in chrome plated bronze or plain bronze finishes to match deck hardware, pilothouse fittings, or classic brightwork.
  • Mounts with #8 F.H. screws, making fastener planning straightforward during installation.
  • Suitable for vessels under 20 meters, including cruising boats, sailboats, workboats, and traditional yachts that need a compliant manual fog bell.
Variants

The Perko 0420 Fog Bell is offered in multiple configurations based on finish, bottom diameter, and overall height.

The size changes the bell diameter and height, while the finish changes the exterior appearance. The cast bronze, medium-weight, removable design is consistent across this 0420 fog bell range.

  • 0420006CHR: Chrome Plated Bronze finish, 6" bottom diameter, 5" overall height. This size suits boats where mounting space is limited but a traditional bronze fog bell is still required.
  • 0420008CHR: Chrome Plated Bronze finish, 8" bottom diameter, 6-1/8" overall height. The larger size gives the bell more visual presence on a pilothouse, cabin side, or deckhouse mounting area.
  • 0420006POL: Plain Bronze finish, 6" bottom diameter, 5" overall height. The plain bronze finish works well on boats with classic bronze deck hardware or fittings that are allowed to age naturally.
  • 0420008POL: Plain Bronze finish, 8" bottom diameter, 6-1/8" overall height. This version pairs the larger bell size with a traditional bronze look for vessels with more available mounting space.
Installation and fit

Plan the mounting location so the bell can swing and be struck cleanly without hitting rails, canvas, doors, or nearby equipment. A rigid mounting surface is important because the bell depends on a solid installation to ring properly, especially on boats that see vibration, spray, and regular movement underway.

Use the listed #8 F.H. screw requirement as the starting point for hardware selection, and match fasteners and backing to the mounting surface. On thin fiberglass, wood trim, or cored panels, proper backing and sealing help keep the installation secure and protect the surrounding structure from water intrusion.

Use cases on board

This fog bell is a practical match for boat owners who want a traditional manual sound signal for coastal cruising, marina use, anchoring, and operation in low visibility. It also fits classic restorations and vessels where bronze hardware is part of the boat's existing style.
