A mechanical gasket such as an O-ring is commonly well-utilized. It is well-placed inside the grooves. When this works to produce a seal, they become one of the most commonly employed seals in machine design. The fundamental function of an O-ring as a sealing device is to prevent fluid or air from escaping. When squeezed between two surfaces, the ring takes up the clearance and prevents fluid or air from leaving. They also retain their shape and revert to their previous state upon release. O-rings can seal with low or no pressure because of their memory, which causes the O-ring to contract against the groove wall when pressure is applied, causing expansion in the opposite direction.
