Overview
The Perko Dual Battery Selector Switch is a compact battery management switch for boats with two or more batteries, letting the operator select Battery 1, Battery 2, both batteries in parallel, or turn both batteries off. It is used on 6-32 VDC marine electrical systems and is rated at 140 amps continuous, 200 amps for 5 minutes intermittent, and 250 amps for 30 seconds starting.
This switch is a practical choice for small boat electrical layouts where one battery may be reserved for starting and another may support accessories. The make-before-break contact layout helps maintain the circuit while switching between battery positions, and the ignition-protected construction supports installation in marine spaces where that rating is required.
The 8521 family uses a red polycarbonate polymer body, a black polymer actuator key, nickel-plated terminals, and 3/8 inch terminal studs. Its oval switch face fits a round cutout, which helps when adding battery control to consoles, lockers, storage bulkheads, interior gunnel walls, or under-seat areas.

Variants
This product is offered in two configurations that use the same Perko 8521 dual battery selector switch format but differ by mounting hardware.
The main difference is the mounting style. The mounting rings and legs version supports surface or bulkhead-style placement with direct cable access, while the cup mount version uses a cup cover that protects the switch face and requires a larger round installation hole.
- 8521DP: Switch with mounting rings and legs. This configuration is suited to console, locker, bulkhead, gunnel wall, or under-seat mounting where the installer needs access behind or around the switch for routing battery cables.
- 8521DPC: Switch only with cup mount. This configuration uses a covered cup-style mount with a 4 inch installation hole and a 4-1/2 inch cup diameter, giving the switch face added protection in exposed or frequently used spaces.
Installation and fit
Plan the mounting location around cable routing, service access, and the ability to clearly see the switch position. The panel mount layout uses a 3 inch installation hole, while the cup mount layout uses a 4 inch installation hole with a 4-1/2 inch cup diameter. The switch face measures 3-7/8 inches by 3-1/4 inches.
On small boats, this type of switch is commonly placed near the battery compartment, inside a console, in a storage locker, on an interior gunnel wall, or under a bench seat. Keeping the switch reachable makes it easier to isolate the batteries at the dock, combine batteries for charging, or disconnect power during maintenance.
Electrical use on board
The switch can be used with alternators and generators on compatible 6-32 VDC marine systems. In a typical dual-battery setup, it lets the operator run loads from one battery, reserve another battery for starting, combine both batteries when needed, or shut the battery circuit down during an electrical issue.
This is a good match for tenders, skiffs, flats boats, inflatables, and other small boats where simple battery selection matters more than a complex automatic charging system. Final cable size, fuse protection, and installation method should match the boat’s electrical design and applicable marine wiring practices.
