The use of jam nuts is for a variety of reasons. The first is when something needs to be attached to soft material, and you can't take the chance of injuring it by securing against it. In the second case, you must fasten something to the bolt while yet allowing it to move. Jam nut installation is a simple process. We'll use our reliable vice in this example to secure the bolt. Once the bolt is in position, tighten the first nut onto it.
