Overview

The Simrad 000-13894-001 is an AP48 rotary autopilot control head that gives you a dedicated helm interface for a networked Simrad and Navico autopilot system. It connects on NMEA 2000 through a Micro-C port and runs on 12V DC (10.8 to 15.6V), with an IPX7 waterproof rating for exposed helm installs.

The 4.1-inch optically bonded color display is built to avoid internal fogging and stay readable in changing light. Control is quick and tactile: a rotary knob for fine adjustments, an extended keypad for mode changes, and port/starboard keys that step 1 degree or 10 degrees at a time.

From the control head you can manage steering modes and access turn patterns, plus features like No Drift steering and depth contour tracking when the rest of the autopilot system and sensors support them.

Key features
  • Optically bonded 4.1-inch color display (320 x 240) with 600 nits brightness.
  • Aluminium rotary control dial paired with an extended keypad for fast menu and steering adjustments.
  • Dedicated 1-degree and 10-degree dodge keys for immediate heading changes to port or starboard.
  • NMEA 2000 Micro-C network connection, rated at 5 LEN for network load planning.
  • 12V DC input range 10.8 to 15.6V, with typical power draw around 2.3W (3W max).
  • IPX7 waterproof rating for open helms and routine washdowns.
  • Mounts flush for a low-profile helm or on an optional bracket; overall size 177 x 115 x 56 mm.
  • Compass-safe distance of 300 mm for cleaner compass placement planning.
  • Operating temperature range from -25 to +65 degrees C.
Compatibility and system integration

This control head is intended for networked autopilot systems and pairs with compatible Navico autopilot computers, including AC12N, AC42N, NAC-2, NAC-3, and SG05.

It needs a powered NMEA 2000 backbone and a Micro-C drop connection. Because the unit expects 12V at the device, boats that distribute 24V at the helm typically feed it from a regulated 12V supply.

Installation and setup

Place it where you can reach the rotary knob without leaving the wheel and where the screen is easy to glance at while underway. The housing measures 177 x 115 x 56 mm, and you can choose a flush mount for a clean panel install or use an optional bracket when the helm layout calls for it.

Allow clearance behind the panel for the connector and cable bend, and keep the control head at least 300 mm from a magnetic compass. Autopilot setup, auto tuning, and calibration are handled through the autopilot system once all components are installed and commissioned.

Use on board

This is a good match for boats that want a dedicated autopilot station at the helm, even with a multifunction display on board. It fits well on cruisers and fishing boats where frequent small course corrections and turn patterns get used in real conditions.

Quality Boat Parts is a reseller. Many items include a manufacturer’s warranty, and all warranty service is handled directly by the manufacturer. We do not manage or administer warranty claims on behalf of customers.

Warranty terms, coverage, and duration are set by each manufacturer. Issues involving defects, repairs, or replacements must be addressed with the manufacturer’s support team. When available, the warranty period is listed on the product page. If it is not shown, contact us or the manufacturer for details before purchasing.

To start a claim, the customer must contact the manufacturer and follow their process. Keep your proof of purchase and original packaging, and register the product if the manufacturer requires it, as these are often needed for warranty service.
