Overview

The Simrad 000-13951-001 is an installation kit for the AP44 autopilot control head, used when mounting an AP44 at the helm or replacing the original installation hardware.

It fits the Simrad AP44 only. This is a mounting accessory and does not include the AP44 control head itself or any autopilot computer, drive unit, compass, or cabling for the rest of the system.

On boats that see regular vibration, spray, and washdowns, having the correct install parts matters for keeping the control head tight in the panel so the keypad and screen stay easy to use underway.

Compatibility and fit

Confirm your control head is labeled AP44 before ordering. This kit is not intended for other Simrad control head sizes or different display families, even if the connectors on the back look similar.

Installation and setup

Plan the mounting location so the display is easy to see from your normal steering position and there is room behind the panel for the cable to bend gently without being kinked. Disconnect power to the autopilot electronics before removing or reinstalling the control head.

If the AP44 is mounted where it can get spray, keep the cutout and surrounding surface clean and use proper sealing practices for exterior panels. Route the cable with a drip loop so water does not track along the cable into the dash.

Use cases on board

This kit is a good match for helm refits, electronics pod rebuilds, or service work where an AP44 needs to come out and go back in cleanly. It is also useful when restoring an older install where the original mounting parts have been lost over time.

Maintenance and care

Rinse salt residue from the helm area and avoid strong solvents around the face of the unit. After the first few trips, re-check that the control head is still snug in the panel, especially on boats that run offshore or spend time in steep chop.
