Before ordering, confirm your boat has the VIPER steer-by-wire steering controller interface used by the Reactor 40 steer-by-wire system, and confirm you have an available spot on the NMEA 2000 backbone for another T-connector and drop.
Installation and setup
Mount the CCU on a rigid surface in a non-submerged location, as close as practical to the boat’s center of rotation. It can be mounted in any orientation, but it needs a clean magnetic environment to read correctly.
Keep the mounting area clear of magnetic and electrical noise sources: avoid locations within 60 cm (2 ft.) of iron, magnets, high-current wiring, or pumps that cycle on and off, and keep large speaker magnets at least 1.5 m (5 ft.) away. A handheld compass check at the mounting point is a practical way to catch interference before you drill.
Route the CCU cable to the steering system connection or CAN bus and protect the connector with dielectric grease, especially on saltwater boats. Leave strain relief and a service loop so the cable is not pulling on the connector when the boat is pounding or vibrating.
Electrical and network integration
The autopilot network runs on NMEA 2000, which should be powered from 9 to 16 VDC through a switch or the boat’s ignition circuit so the network does not sit on the battery when the boat is off. Only one power feed should be used on a given NMEA 2000 backbone.
