This Pinion Nut is for OMC Johnson/Evinrude 30 - 300 hp V4 and V6 engines. It has 5/8 inches 18 x 11/16 inches pinion nuts. This part can be found on the lower gear housing drive shaft 1986-1993 model and the lower gear housing component from the 1978-1985 model. This item can also be found on both Cobra 2.3L - 3.0L lower gear housing diagram and the Cobra 3.0L - 5.7L lower gear housing diagram OMC sterndrive. They connect the steering shaft so the gear will spin and move the rack when the steering wheel turns. This whirring noise during acceleration or deceleration at various speeds is a symptom of the failed pinion nuts. It is because it rotates several times faster than the carrier assembly of the vehicle.
