Overview

The Garmin 010-10082-00 is a power and data cable that hard-wires compatible Garmin handheld GPS units to a boat’s DC system and to other onboard electronics. Compatibility and fit

This cable is used with Garmin handheld and portable units that have the round 4-pin power/data port. It’s commonly used with Garmin GPS 73 and GPSMAP 78, GPSMAP 79, and GPSMAP 86 series handhelds, along with older Garmin GPS and GPSMAP units that use the same 4-pin interface.

Before ordering, confirm the connector style on the back of your device. Some Garmin models use different power/data plugs, so the port shape matters more than the name on the bezel.

Installation and wiring

The bare wire end is meant for a permanent install. Route the cable so it stays supported and avoids sharp edges, hinge points, and spots where it can chafe under vibration.

Connect the power leads to a fused DC supply that matches what your handheld expects, and keep splices in a dry location when possible. On open boats or exposed runs, use sealed connectors and add strain relief so the wire terminations do not carry the load.

Electrical and system integration

The data leads can be used for NMEA 0183 serial connections when your handheld is configured to output data. This is useful when you want the handheld’s GPS position to be available to another device on board, such as an autopilot, chartplotter, or computer interface.

Wire the data and ground/reference leads to the receiving device’s NMEA 0183 input as required by that device. Verify each conductor function before finalizing connections, especially when tying into existing instrument wiring.

This cable makes sense for skippers who keep a handheld mounted at the helm for backup navigation, small-boat charting, or cockpit reference and want it powered whenever the boat is on. It also fits setups where sharing basic GPS data over a simple serial link is preferred over adding a full network backbone.

After installation, check that the cable is secured every few inches and that no section can rub on fiberglass, aluminum edges, or fasteners. Periodically inspect terminations for corrosion, and re-seal any splices that show greening or moisture intrusion.
