Overview
The Victron Energy Smart BMS is a 12V battery management system range for Victron Lithium Battery Smart 12.8V LiFePO4 batteries in boat installations with a 12V alternator. It monitors individual battery cells and can disconnect alternator charging, charge sources, or DC loads when cell voltage or temperature moves outside safe limits. Both configurations support up to 20 batteries in one 12V system, with a maximum listed storage capacity of 84 kWh.
On a vessel, this unit sits between the lithium service battery bank, starter battery, alternator, chargers, and DC loads, helping the electrical system behave predictably during engine charging, dockside charging, and heavy load use. Bluetooth monitoring and configuration through VictronConnect, a remote on/off terminal, load and charge disconnect outputs, and a pre-alarm output make it practical for installations where the BMS may be mounted in a battery locker, technical space, or under a berth.
Key features
- For 12V Victron Lithium Battery Smart 12.8V LiFePO4 banks used with a 12V alternator.
- Monitors each battery cell and can disconnect alternator charging, charge sources, or DC loads for low cell voltage, high cell voltage, or high temperature.
- Dedicated alternator connection gives current limiting and one-way current flow from alternator to lithium battery.
- Bluetooth supports monitoring and configuration in VictronConnect, with Instant Readout available for key values without opening the BMS connection.
- Remote on/off terminal allows system control from a switch position away from the battery compartment.
- Pre-alarm output can drive a relay, LED, or buzzer before the BMS disconnects the battery bank.
- IP65 electronics protection and a -40 °C to +60 °C operating range support use in protected marine electrical spaces.
- M8 DC power connections and a 6.3 mm Faston battery-minus connector support high-current DC wiring layouts.
Variants
This product family is offered in two amperage configurations. The 100A model is the Smart BMS CL 12-100, while the 200A model is the Smart BMS 12-200.
Both variants are built around the same 12V Victron lithium BMS role, with cell monitoring, alternator current limiting, Bluetooth, remote on/off, load and charge disconnect outputs, pre-alarm output, IP65 electronics protection, and the same listed operating temperature range. The main choice is the current capacity and the way the higher-current 12-200 adds a System+ power port for loads and additional chargers.
- BMS110022000, 100A: Smart BMS CL 12-100. This configuration has a 100A alternator port maximum charge current when fitted with a 125A fuse, and its enclosure measures 65 x 120 x 224 mm.
- BMS210055000, 200A: Smart BMS 12-200. This configuration adds a System+ power port with 200A maximum continuous charge and discharge current, 400A peak discharge current, and an enclosure size of 65 x 120 x 340 mm.
Electrical and system integration
The alternator input is electronically limited to about 90% of the installed fuse rating, so fuse selection is part of setting the alternator charge current. With a 100A fuse, the input current is limited to about 90A; with the 125A fuse used for the rated alternator port maximum, the system reaches the 100A class shown for these models.
The load and charge disconnect outputs are low-current control outputs for external equipment such as BatteryProtect units, chargers, relays, indicators, or control circuits. The pre-alarm output is normally free-floating and goes high in case of alarm, with a 1A maximum rating, so it is useful for a helm or electrical-panel warning circuit before battery protection shuts the system down.
Installation and fit
Mount the BMS where the electronics stay protected from direct bilge water while still allowing short cable runs to the battery bank, starter battery, alternator feed, and DC distribution. The IP65 electronics rating helps with dust and spray exposure in sheltered locations, but the unit should still be installed as part of a properly fused DC system with marine cable sizes matched to the expected current.
The 100A unit weighs 1.6 kg, and the 200A unit weighs 2 kg. The 200A model is longer because of its higher-current System+ layout, so check available battery-compartment or electrical-panel space before selecting the variant.
Use cases on board
This BMS range suits lithium service-bank installations on cruising boats, fishing boats, workboats, and refit projects where a 12V alternator, starter battery, and Victron Lithium Battery Smart bank need coordinated protection. It is especially relevant where the crew wants app-based monitoring, remote system shutoff, and an early warning output at the helm or electrical panel.
Shipping
We ship worldwide from the United States. Rates are calculated at checkout based on destination and package weight. Some items include free shipping, which will show automatically. Not every product is eligible for international shipping; checkout will confirm eligibility. We do not ship to PO Boxes except through USPS, and not all packages qualify.
Processing and dispatch
Most orders are verified, packed, and handed to the carrier within 1 to 2 business days. Some products may need extra handling time or ship directly from the manufacturer. For certain international orders, inventory transfers between warehouses may add time. If any delay is expected, we will let you know the dispatch date.
Delivery and tracking
Deliveries are handled by trusted carriers such as USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL. Estimated arrival times appear at checkout and depend on your location and the service you choose. These are estimates and can be affected by customs or carrier disruptions. A shipping confirmation with a tracking link is emailed when your order ships, and tracking may take up to 24 hours to update. You can also view tracking in your account.
Duties, taxes, and support
International customers are responsible for any customs duties, taxes, and fees charged by the destination country. If these charges are refused and a shipment returns to us, the carrier’s return cost and any re-entry customs fees will be deducted from the refund. If your order is late or you need help, contact cs@qualityboatparts.com and we will assist you.
Quality Boat Parts is a reseller. Many items include a manufacturer’s warranty, and all warranty service is handled directly by the manufacturer. We do not manage or administer warranty claims on behalf of customers.
Warranty terms, coverage, and duration are set by each manufacturer. Issues involving defects, repairs, or replacements must be addressed with the manufacturer’s support team. When available, the warranty period is listed on the product page. If it is not shown, contact us or the manufacturer for details before purchasing.
To start a claim, the customer must contact the manufacturer and follow their process. Keep your proof of purchase and original packaging, and register the product if the manufacturer requires it, as these are often needed for warranty service.
We are happy to help you find the right contact or documentation, but we cannot decide outcomes or intervene in claim resolutions. For guidance, email cs@qualityboatparts.com.
