Overview

The Victron Energy Orion IP67 is a non-isolated DC-DC converter range for stepping battery voltage up or down in marine electrical systems. These models cover 24V to 12V conversion in 5A, 10A, 20A and 100A outputs, plus a 12V to 24V version with 50A continuous output.

With an IP67 enclosure, cast aluminium casing and electronics moulded in resin, the Orion IP67 is suited to exposed or semi-exposed onboard locations where spray, dirt, vibration and engine-room heat are part of normal use. The range operates from -40 to +70°C, with full rated output up to 40°C and derating above that temperature.

For fit planning, the 24/12-5, 24/12-10 and 24/12-20 models use integrated 1.8 m input and output cables. The higher-current 24/12-100 and 12/24-50 models use M6 bolt connections and share the larger 265 x 127 x 63 mm enclosure size.

Variants

The Orion IP67 range is offered in several voltage and current configurations for different onboard DC loads.

The main differences are input voltage, output voltage, continuous output current, connection style and enclosure size. The IP67 aluminium enclosure, resin-moulded electronics, non-isolated architecture and automatic overload recovery apply across the range.

• ORI241205260 converts 24V input to 12V output with 5A continuous output current. This compact 60W version suits smaller 12V loads on vessels with a 24V house or service battery system.
• ORI241210260 converts 24V input to 12V output with 10A continuous output current. This 120W version gives more capacity for modest 12V electronics or auxiliary loads.
• ORI241220260 converts 24V input to 12V output with 20A continuous output current. This 240W version fits higher 12V demand while still using the cable-connected Orion IP67 housing.
• ORI241221226 converts 24V input to 12V output with 100A continuous output current. This 1200W version uses M6 bolt connections for larger DC wiring and heavier 12V loads.
• ORI122421226 converts 12V input to 24V output with 50A continuous output current. This 1200W version supports 24V equipment from a 12V supply and uses M6 bolt connections.

Installation and setup

Plan the installation around the converter current rating, cable run length and over-current protection. The 5A, 10A and 20A versions include 1.8 m input and output cables, which can reduce the number of extra junctions in damp areas. The 100A and 50A versions use M6 bolt connections, so terminal protection, strain relief and correctly sized conductors matter more during layout.

The converter should be mounted where heat can escape from the enclosure. It can operate in hot machinery spaces, but output is derated above 40°C, so avoid placing it directly against heat sources or inside a sealed compartment with no airflow.

Electrical and system integration

Use this range when the boat has equipment that needs a different DC voltage than the main battery bank provides. Common examples include keeping 12V navigation, communication or accessory circuits on a 24V vessel, or running a 24V device from a 12V system where the 12/24 model has the right current capacity.

These are non-isolated converters, so they belong in systems where isolation between input and output is not required. Output voltage is regulated to within 3 percent, and efficiency ranges from 93 percent to 96 percent depending on the model.

Use cases on board

The Orion IP67 range is a practical match for workboats, cruising yachts, fishing boats and refit projects where mixed-voltage DC loads need dependable conversion near machinery spaces, deck lockers or other service areas. The IP67 enclosure and encapsulated electronics make it especially useful where the converter may be exposed to moisture, grime or vibration that would be a poor fit for an open-frame electrical component.
