Overview
The Perko 0086 Round Strainer is a cast bronze thru-hull intake strainer for protecting raw-water openings below the waterline. It is made for common intake sizes from 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch up to 3 inches, with outside diameters ranging from 2-1/2 inches to 8 inches depending on the selected configuration.
This round strainer sits over the outside of the thru-hull opening and uses drilled holes to help keep larger debris away from the intake. It is a practical fit for raw-water pickup points serving systems such as engine cooling, washdown pumps, livewells, air conditioning, or other onboard seawater circuits where an exterior strainer is part of the installation.
The cast bronze construction suits underwater hardware locations where corrosion resistance and long service life matter. The series is Marine UL listed, which helps when matching replacement hardware or building out a compliant marine plumbing installation.
Key features
- Cast bronze construction for thru-hull intake locations exposed to seawater.
- Round profile with drilled holes to reduce the chance of larger debris entering the intake opening.
- Marine UL listed for use in marine underwater hardware applications.
- Covers thru-hull sizes from 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch through 3 inches across the available range.
- Outside diameter and inside diameter vary by size, so the strainer can be matched to the existing thru-hull and hull surface clearance.
- Smaller sizes use #8 screws, while the 6 inch and 8 inch outside diameter versions use #10 screws.
Variants
The range varies by thru-hull size, outside diameter, and inside diameter. Available configurations cover 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch, 1-1/4 inch and 1-1/2 inch, 2 inch, 2-1/2 inch, and 3 inch thru-hull openings.
Across the range, the product remains a cast bronze round strainer with drilled holes and Marine UL listing. The smaller configurations run from 2-1/2 inches to 5 inches outside diameter, while the larger configurations use 6 inch and 8 inch outside diameters for bigger thru-hull intakes.
Installation and fit
Match the strainer to the thru-hull size first, then confirm that the outside diameter has enough flat hull surface around the opening for proper bedding and fastening. The inside diameter also matters because it needs to clear the intake opening without restricting the fitting it is meant to protect.
Before installation, check the hull surface, existing hole pattern, screw size, and access behind the fitting area. Use marine sealant suitable for underwater hardware and follow normal thru-hull service practices for bedding, fastening, and leak checks after launch.
Use cases on board
This strainer is a good match for boats that need a simple bronze cover over a raw-water intake in a saltwater or freshwater environment. It works well as a replacement when the existing round strainer has been damaged, painted over too many times, or no longer matches the thru-hull being serviced.
It is especially useful on cruising boats, fishing boats, and workboats with intake systems that may see grass, shells, floating debris, or dockside growth around the hull. The round format keeps the installation straightforward when the boat already has a compatible thru-hull layout.
Maintenance and care
Inspect the strainer during haulout and clean the drilled holes so water can reach the intake freely. Heavy paint buildup, marine growth, or blocked holes can reduce flow to the system the intake serves.
When replacing an older strainer, inspect the surrounding hull laminate or planking, fasteners, bedding compound, and thru-hull fitting at the same time. Replacing the visible strainer is also a good moment to confirm that the intake path is clear and that the seacock or connected valve operates properly.

Quality Boat Parts is a reseller. Many items include a manufacturer’s warranty, and all warranty service is handled directly by the manufacturer. We do not manage or administer warranty claims on behalf of customers.
Warranty terms, coverage, and duration are set by each manufacturer. Issues involving defects, repairs, or replacements must be addressed with the manufacturer’s support team. When available, the warranty period is listed on the product page. If it is not shown, contact us or the manufacturer for details before purchasing.
To start a claim, the customer must contact the manufacturer and follow their process. Keep your proof of purchase and original packaging, and register the product if the manufacturer requires it, as these are often needed for warranty service.
