Overview

The Garmin Reactor 40 Hydraulic Corepack is a hydraulic autopilot system built around the Reactor 40 core and SmartPump v2 for boats with hydraulic steering.

SmartPump v2 runs on 11.5-30 Vdc and uses a 40 A blade-type fuse, which fits common 12 V and 24 V installations. The pump assembly measures 7 3/4 in x 7 1/2 in x 9 5/8 in, and the system is compatible with steering cylinder sizes from 4-24 cu in.

The solid-state 9-axis AHRS (CCU) supports flexible mounting below decks, and autopilot data is shared over NMEA 2000 so it can integrate cleanly with the rest of your networked electronics.

Variants

This package is offered with different helm control options. The configurations below pair the Reactor 40 hydraulic corepack and SmartPump v2 with the listed autopilot instrument option.

The item that varies is the included autopilot instrument at the helm. If no instrument is included, control is handled through a compatible Garmin chartplotter or a separately added GHC helm control.

• 010-02794-01: Autopilot instrument: GHC 50. A 5-inch touchscreen gives you a dedicated autopilot control point at the helm, with wireless Garmin Marine Network connectivity.
• 010-00705-79: Autopilot instrument: GHC 20. A color QVGA LCD (320 x 240) with IPX7 water rating and NMEA 0183 plus NMEA 2000 output for straightforward network integration.
• 010-00705-78: Autopilot instrument: None included. This configuration is suited to installs where autopilot control will be handled through an existing compatible Garmin chartplotter or a separately installed GHC control head.

Compatibility and fit

This system is for boats with hydraulic steering and is compatible with steering cylinder sizes from 4-24 cu in. For lock-to-lock guidance, it supports a 7-second lock-to-lock up to 17 cu in.

Plan for a NMEA 2000 backbone to connect the CCU and any helm control units. SmartPump v2 takes main power from the boat DC system (11.5-30 Vdc), while networked components use NMEA 2000 power where applicable.

Installation and setup

SmartPump v2 is typically installed below decks near the steering plumbing, with the CCU placed where it can be securely mounted and protected from direct bilge splash. The CCU is 3 19/32 in in diameter, and the buzzer/alarm is 29/32 in x 1.0 in.

Cable runs are easier to plan when you know the included lengths: SmartPump v2 power cable is 9 ft, CCU cable is 9.5 ft, and the buzzer/alarm cable is 10 ft. Hydraulic hoses and fittings are selected to match your existing steering setup and mounting layout.

Network and control integration

Helm control and data sharing run through NMEA 2000, which allows autopilot heading data to be shared with other networked devices. When paired with a compatible Garmin chartplotter, this can support features like MARPA and chart overlay that rely on shared heading information.

Use on board

This setup makes sense for hydraulically steered boats that want autopilot control while trolling, cruising between waypoints, or holding a steady course in changing sea state. It also works well for multi-station boats that need control at more than one helm, since the system supports up to three GHC control units.
