Overview
The Hella Marine 004532021 is a compact halogen map lamp that plugs into a 12V DC accessory outlet and reaches with a 6-1/4 in flexible metal arm.
It is built for close-up tasks where you want light on a chart, a switch panel, or a book without lighting up the whole cabin. The lamp head has its own on and off switch, so you can make quick adjustments while keeping one hand free.
This style of lamp is often used at a nav station, at the helm, or near a berth as a dedicated reading light. Since halogen lamps run warm, it is best to keep the head clear of paper charts, fabrics, and anything that can’t take heat.
Key features
- Plugs into a standard 12V outlet for simple, portable task lighting
- 6-1/4 in flexible metal arm to aim the light where you need it
- 12V DC, 6W lamp for focused close-range work
- On and off switch located on the lamp head
- Works well for chart tables, helm stations, and cabin reading spots where space is tight
Installation and setup
For plug-in use, place the base where the arm can bend freely, then route the cord so it can’t snag on a wheel, throttle, or companionway step. If your outlet is on a switched circuit, the light will shut off with the panel, which can help avoid leaving it on by accident.
If you want the lamp to live in one spot, mount it on a solid surface where vibration is low and the head won’t shine directly into the helmsman’s eyes. A backing plate behind thin liners helps keep the base from working loose over time.
Compatibility and fit
This lamp is for 12V DC systems. On boats that run 24V house power, use a 12V outlet or a proper step-down feed rather than connecting it directly to 24V.
Plan around the 6-1/4 in reach and the arc of the flexible arm. A little clearance behind the base makes it easier to aim the beam across a chart table without creating glare off varnished surfaces or instrument lenses.
Use on board
Common placements include the navigation station for chart work, the helm for night checks of instruments, and a berth-side bulkhead for reading. It is also handy on boats with multiple 12V outlets, since you can move it between stations when needed.
This is a good match for skippers who want a focused, adjustable light for detailed work and prefer a plug-in setup over running new wiring.
Maintenance and care
Let the lamp cool before wiping it down. If you need to replace the bulb, match the original voltage and wattage and avoid touching the glass with bare fingers, since oils can shorten bulb life.
