Overview

The Simrad 000-14470-001 is a fixed-mount VHF marine radio with Class D DSC and an integrated dual-channel AIS receiver, so you can make calls, send distress alerts, and view AIS targets from one unit.

It runs on a 12 V DC battery system (13.6 V nominal) and transmits at up to 25 W with a 1 W low-power option. The housing is rated IPx7, and the radio measures 201.2 mm wide x 97.8 mm high x 163.3 mm deep (without bracket).

Position for DSC and AIS can come from the built-in GPS system using the internal antenna, an optional external GPS antenna via the SMA port, or a shared GPS source over NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183.

Key features
  • Class D DSC with an internal GPS receiver so distress calls can include your position
  • Dual-channel AIS receive with target data shown on the radio screen and available to a compatible multifunction display
  • NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 connectivity for GPS sharing, DSC/AIS data, and backlight syncing over NMEA 2000
  • 12 V DC power supply with an 8 A fuse and selectable 25 W or 1 W transmit power
  • IPx7 waterproof rating for wet helm and washdown-prone mounting locations
  • Removable fist mic that can plug into the front or rear, with support for extension cabling when the radio and mic need to be separated
  • Supports up to two wireless handsets and intercom operation when multiple handsets are paired
  • Connections for an optional loudhailer or an external speaker
Installation and setup

Plan for a VHF antenna connection at the radio using the SO-239 connector. Power is a 12 V DC feed; allow for up to 6 A draw at 25 W transmit and protect the circuit with the specified 8 A fuse.

The fist mic can be positioned where it is easy to reach, with the radio body mounted separately if that suits your helm layout. For the built-in GPS, the internal antenna works best when the mounting location has a clear view; the SMA port supports an external GPS antenna when the radio is installed under a hardtop or inside an enclosed console.

Network and system integration

NMEA 2000 is a clean way to share position and distribute DSC-related information to other devices on the boat. NMEA 0183 is also available for serial GPS input and output, with higher baud settings commonly used when AIS sentences are carried on the line.

On-board use

With AIS receive built in, the RS40 helps you keep track of AIS-equipped vessels when running in shipping lanes, busy inlets, or crowded harbors. The 1 W transmit option is useful for close-range calls when you do not need full output power.

This model is a good match for skippers who want DSC safety calling and AIS receive without adding a separate AIS receiver, and for boats that already use NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 to share GPS data across onboard electronics.

Maintenance and care

The radio is rated IPx7, but it still helps to mount it where the front panel is not taking constant spray. Rinse salt residue with fresh water, keep the mic connection seated, and check the antenna connector periodically for corrosion and looseness.

Quality Boat Parts is a reseller. Many items include a manufacturer’s warranty, and all warranty service is handled directly by the manufacturer. We do not manage or administer warranty claims on behalf of customers.

Warranty terms, coverage, and duration are set by each manufacturer. Issues involving defects, repairs, or replacements must be addressed with the manufacturer’s support team. When available, the warranty period is listed on the product page. If it is not shown, contact us or the manufacturer for details before purchasing.

To start a claim, the customer must contact the manufacturer and follow their process. Keep your proof of purchase and original packaging, and register the product if the manufacturer requires it, as these are often needed for warranty service.

We are happy to help you find the right contact or documentation, but we cannot decide outcomes or intervene in claim resolutions. For guidance, email cs@qualityboatparts.com.
