Overview
The Blue Sea Systems SMS Surface Mount System Panel Enclosure is a surface mounted breaker enclosure for adding AC shore power protection, DC branch protection, or blank breaker positions where a built-in panel is not practical. It is used for ELCI main circuit breakers and other large frame devices, with configurations covering 12/24V DC, 120V AC, 120/240V AC, 230V AC, and 240V AC systems.
The enclosure uses a glass filled polycarbonate base with a clear cover, so breaker position and status can be checked without opening the box. Common sizing across the range is 6.0" x 6.0" x 4.0" for the enclosure and 7.6" x 7.4" x 4.7" overall, which makes it useful for bulkheads, equipment spaces, lazarettes, and other protected boat locations where access and visibility matter.
AC ELCI versions support ABYC E-11 installation layouts when used with an ELCI main breaker and mounted within 10 feet of the shore power inlet. The SMS range also includes DC and UL-489 breaker configurations for vessels that need a surface mounted distribution point rather than a flush panel cutout.
Key features
- Surface mount enclosure for ELCI main breakers, DC main breakers, branch breakers, and blank breaker positions, depending on the selected configuration.
- Glass filled polycarbonate base with a clear cover that lets the operator view breaker status before opening the enclosure.
- Overlapping cover and formed-in-place PUR gasket help protect the breaker area from spray, washdown exposure, and damp onboard spaces.
- Stainless steel latch, hinge pin, cover screws, and mounting hardware help reduce corrosion issues in marine electrical installations.
- Blank circuit positions accept Carling Technologies A-Series and C-Series flat rocker breakers and ELCI main breakers where the selected model includes blank positions.
- Selected AC ELCI configurations meet ABYC E-11 requirements when installed with the ELCI main breaker within 10 feet of the AC shore power inlet.
- Configurations are available for 12/24V DC, 120V AC, 120/240V AC, 230V AC, and 240V AC applications, so the same enclosure family can match different onboard power layouts.
- LED options vary by configuration and can provide breaker ON indication, reverse polarity indication, or back lighting where included.
Variants
The SMS Surface Mount System Panel Enclosure range is offered in multiple electrical layouts. The configurations vary by system voltage, main breaker type, main breaker amperage, branch breaker count, and number of blank circuit positions.
DC versions cover 12/24V installations with branch or main-and-branch breaker layouts. AC versions include 120V, 120/240V, 230V, and 240V ELCI layouts, including models for shore power inlet protection and one 240V version intended for isolation transformer applications. UL-489 versions are also available for vessels that require that breaker specification.
Installation and fit
This enclosure is meant for surface mounting, which helps when there is not enough panel depth for a recessed electrical panel or when the breaker group needs to sit close to the shore power inlet, battery distribution point, or equipment it protects. The removable stainless steel hinge pin gives the installer more room to work when fastening the enclosure and landing conductors.
The 6.0" square enclosure footprint should be checked against the available mounting area, wire bend radius, cable entry direction, and service clearance. For AC ELCI shore power installations, placement within the required distance from the shore power inlet is a key part of the installation plan.
Electrical and system integration
The selected configuration should match the vessel voltage, incoming power type, and required breaker arrangement. A 120V AC ELCI model is not interchangeable with a 230V AC model, and a DC model should only be used in the DC distribution role it is configured for.
Blank positions are useful when the boat owner or installer needs to load the enclosure with compatible breakers for a specific system plan. Models with branch breakers already installed are better suited to installations where the branch circuit ratings match the equipment being protected.
Use cases on board
This enclosure is a practical match for refits, shore power upgrades, added DC distribution near equipment, and installations where a breaker group needs to be visible and reachable without cutting a large flush panel opening. It is especially useful on cruising boats, workboats, and fishing boats where electrical changes often need a clean surface mounted solution.
For best results, the final selection should be matched to the vessel wiring diagram, breaker rating requirements, shore power inlet arrangement, and any ABYC or regulatory requirements that apply to the boat.
Shipping
We ship worldwide from the United States. Rates are calculated at checkout based on destination and package weight. Some items include free shipping, which will show automatically. Not every product is eligible for international shipping; checkout will confirm eligibility. We do not ship to PO Boxes except through USPS, and not all packages qualify.
Processing and dispatch
Most orders are verified, packed, and handed to the carrier within 1 to 2 business days. Some products may need extra handling time or ship directly from the manufacturer. For certain international orders, inventory transfers between warehouses may add time. If any delay is expected, we will let you know the dispatch date.
Delivery and tracking
Deliveries are handled by trusted carriers such as USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL. Estimated arrival times appear at checkout and depend on your location and the service you choose. These are estimates and can be affected by customs or carrier disruptions. A shipping confirmation with a tracking link is emailed when your order ships, and tracking may take up to 24 hours to update. You can also view tracking in your account.
Duties, taxes, and support
International customers are responsible for any customs duties, taxes, and fees charged by the destination country. If these charges are refused and a shipment returns to us, the carrier’s return cost and any re-entry customs fees will be deducted from the refund. If your order is late or you need help, contact cs@qualityboatparts.com and we will assist you.
Quality Boat Parts is a reseller. Many items include a manufacturer’s warranty, and all warranty service is handled directly by the manufacturer. We do not manage or administer warranty claims on behalf of customers.
Warranty terms, coverage, and duration are set by each manufacturer. Issues involving defects, repairs, or replacements must be addressed with the manufacturer’s support team. When available, the warranty period is listed on the product page. If it is not shown, contact us or the manufacturer for details before purchasing.
To start a claim, the customer must contact the manufacturer and follow their process. Keep your proof of purchase and original packaging, and register the product if the manufacturer requires it, as these are often needed for warranty service.
We are happy to help you find the right contact or documentation, but we cannot decide outcomes or intervene in claim resolutions. For guidance, email cs@qualityboatparts.com.
