Overview
The Vimar VM16556 is a rotary dimmer for 230 V AC lighting circuits in the Vimar Idea modular system. It is rated for 60 to 900 W on incandescent and halogen lamps, and 60 to 300 VA when controlling ferromagnetic transformers for extra low voltage halogen lighting.
This is an AC dimmer for boats with a 230 V distribution system from shore power, generator, or inverter. It is commonly used for cabin or saloon lighting where you want to trim brightness without changing fixtures.
The control includes a locator function that makes it easier to find in the dark, and it is intended for dry, dust-free mounting locations between 0°C and +35°C.
Key features
- 230 V~ 50-60 Hz rotary dimmer for resistive loads (incandescent and halogen) from 60 to 900 W
- Supports inductive loads with ferromagnetic transformers from 60 to 300 VA (extra low voltage halogen circuits)
- Solid-state TRIAC dimming with adjustment via rotary potentiometer
- Locator function for finding the control in the dark; locator brightness reduces as lamp brightness increases
- Specified for dry, dust-free locations from 0°C to +35°C, which fits protected interior use on board
- Intended to be wired with a fuse holder and a quick-acting high breaking capacity fuse type F5AH 250 V
- Dial illumination uses a separate bulb option, available in voltages including 12/24 V and 110/250 V, sold separately
Installation and setup
This dimmer installs in place of a standard switch on a 230 V AC lighting circuit and can also be used in circuits with two or more control points when paired with the appropriate switching arrangement. Multiple dimmers should not be connected in series with each other.
The unit does not provide mechanical isolation in the main circuit, so the load side should be treated as live whenever the breaker is on. Plan for safe access so power can be isolated before any service work.
Compatibility and fit
Match the connected load to the rated ranges and keep within the stated limits for both lamp wattage and transformer VA. If two dimmers are installed in the same box, the controllable load per dimmer needs to be reduced so the combined load stays within the stated maximums.
On board, this model makes the most sense where the lighting load is on the 230 V side of the boat, not for directly dimming 12/24 V DC fixtures. If you want the dial to glow as a locator, the illumination bulb should be selected to match the voltage of the circuit feeding that locator light.
Use cases on board
A good match for European-spec sailboats and motor yachts that already use Vimar Idea switchgear and have 230 V cabin lighting you want to soften for evenings at anchor or night running.
Maintenance and care
Mount it away from spray, washdowns, and spaces that trap moisture. If the locator illumination is used, the small bulb can be replaced when it dims or fails, keeping the bulb voltage matched to your panel lighting circuit.
This model is discontinued, so availability may be limited if you are planning spares for a uniform set of onboard controls.
Shipping
We ship worldwide from the United States. Rates are calculated at checkout based on destination and package weight. Some items include free shipping, which will show automatically. Not every product is eligible for international shipping; checkout will confirm eligibility. We do not ship to PO Boxes except through USPS, and not all packages qualify.

Quality Boat Parts is a reseller. Many items include a manufacturer’s warranty, and all warranty service is handled directly by the manufacturer. We do not manage or administer warranty claims on behalf of customers.
Warranty terms, coverage, and duration are set by each manufacturer. Issues involving defects, repairs, or replacements must be addressed with the manufacturer’s support team. When available, the warranty period is listed on the product page. If it is not shown, contact us or the manufacturer for details before purchasing.
To start a claim, the customer must contact the manufacturer and follow their process. Keep your proof of purchase and original packaging, and register the product if the manufacturer requires it, as these are often needed for warranty service.
