Overview
The Garmin inReach Messenger is a compact satellite communicator for boats and remote travel where cell coverage drops out, letting you send and receive messages and trigger an interactive SOS when you need help.
It uses the Iridium satellite network for global coverage and pairs with a phone for easier typing and contact sync. The unit is rated IPX7 for water resistance and is small enough to live in a ditch bag or foul-weather jacket pocket at 3.1 in x 2.5 in x 0.9 in and about 4 oz.
Battery life depends on configuration and tracking interval, with up to 28 days (inReach Messenger) or up to 25 days (inReach Messenger Plus) in 10-minute tracking mode. Satellite messaging and SOS require an active satellite subscription.
Key features
- Two-way messaging over the Iridium satellite network when you are outside cellular range
- Interactive SOS messaging to a 24/7 emergency response coordination center
- IPX7 water-resistance for spray, rain, and brief submersion scenarios common on deck
- Compact form factor (3.1 in x 2.5 in x 0.9 in) and lightweight build (about 4 oz) for carry or stowage in safety gear
- On-device monochrome memory-in-pixel display for message confirmation and reading replies
- Tracking support with long runtimes for multi-day passages and backcountry trips
- TracBack routing support for returning along the path you came in
- inReach weather forecasts available on the device or through a paired phone
Variants
This product is offered in multiple configurations that change the type of messages you can send while beyond cellular range.
The listed options indicate whether photo and voice messaging is supported when paired with the Garmin Messenger app. Satellite subscription requirements still apply for satellite communication features.
- 010-02672-00: Photo & Voice Messaging: No. This configuration focuses on text messaging and SOS, which is often the simplest fit for a grab-and-go emergency communicator on board.
- 010-02887-00: Photo & Voice Messaging: Yes. This configuration supports sending photos and voice recordings through the paired app, which can help share context during troubleshooting or emergencies when text alone is not enough.
Installation and setup
There is no fixed mount required. Most boaters keep it in a known, easy-to-reach spot such as the nav station, cockpit bag, or ditch bag, then clip or lanyard it when moving around on deck.
Pair it with the Garmin Messenger app, complete activation, and send a few test messages before leaving the dock. For best satellite performance, use it where it has a clear view of the sky and avoid stowing it deep inside metal lockers while trying to message or track.
On-board use notes
This is a good match for coastal cruising, offshore runs, and remote fishing trips where you want a backstop to VHF and cellular service. It is also useful for small craft and crews who spend time away from the helm and still want a way to check in or call for help.

We ship worldwide from the United States. Rates are calculated at checkout based on destination and package weight. Some items include free shipping, which will show automatically. Not every product is eligible for international shipping; checkout will confirm eligibility. We do not ship to PO Boxes except through USPS, and not all packages qualify.
Processing and dispatch
Most orders are verified, packed, and handed to the carrier within 1 to 2 business days. Some products may need extra handling time or ship directly from the manufacturer. For certain international orders, inventory transfers between warehouses may add time. If any delay is expected, we will let you know the dispatch date.
Delivery and tracking
Deliveries are handled by trusted carriers such as USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL. Estimated arrival times appear at checkout and depend on your location and the service you choose. These are estimates and can be affected by customs or carrier disruptions. A shipping confirmation with a tracking link is emailed when your order ships, and tracking may take up to 24 hours to update. You can also view tracking in your account.
Duties, taxes, and support
International customers are responsible for any customs duties, taxes, and fees charged by the destination country. If these charges are refused and a shipment returns to us, the carrier’s return cost and any re-entry customs fees will be deducted from the refund. If your order is late or you need help, contact cs@qualityboatparts.com and we will assist you.
Quality Boat Parts is a reseller. Many items include a manufacturer’s warranty, and all warranty service is handled directly by the manufacturer. We do not manage or administer warranty claims on behalf of customers.
Warranty terms, coverage, and duration are set by each manufacturer. Issues involving defects, repairs, or replacements must be addressed with the manufacturer’s support team. When available, the warranty period is listed on the product page. If it is not shown, contact us or the manufacturer for details before purchasing.
To start a claim, the customer must contact the manufacturer and follow their process. Keep your proof of purchase and original packaging, and register the product if the manufacturer requires it, as these are often needed for warranty service.
We are happy to help you find the right contact or documentation, but we cannot decide outcomes or intervene in claim resolutions. For guidance, email cs@qualityboatparts.com.
