Overview

The Victron Energy Orion DC-DC Converters Non-isolated, High power is a range of non-isolated DC-DC converters for boats and other DC systems that need 24V to 12V step-down conversion or 12V to 24V step-up conversion. The range covers continuous output currents from 8A to 80A, with 24V-input models accepting 18 to 35V and 12V-input models accepting 9 to 18V.

These converters are useful when one battery system has to feed equipment at another DC voltage, such as 12V electronics on a 24V vessel or a 24V load on a 12V installation. Because the range is non-isolated, it is intended for systems where the input and output sides can share the same DC negative.

Variants

This parent range varies by voltage conversion direction, output current and DC terminal style. The configurations include 24V to 12V models at 30A, 60A and 80A, plus 12V to 24V models at 8A, 10A and 25A.

Connection style changes across the range. Lower-current configurations use 6.3 mm Faston tabs, the 60A 24V to 12V configuration uses double 6.3 mm Faston tabs, and the 80A and 25A configurations use M6 bolt terminals, with one 80A 24V to 12V option using binding posts with M6 bolts. Output adjustability, remote on-off, parallel operation, fan-assisted cooling, dimensions and off-load current also vary by configuration, so the final variant needs to match the vessel's DC architecture and available mounting space.

Electrical and system integration

Because these converters are non-isolated, they belong in DC systems where the input and output sides can share the same negative reference. For vessels with battery banks or circuits that must stay galvanically isolated, an isolated DC-DC converter category is more appropriate.

Adjustable-output models in this range can be used as a power supply or as a buffer charger, such as charging a 12V starter or accessory battery from a 24V system. Fixed-output models should be treated as converters for matching DC loads rather than as configurable chargers.

Installation and fit

Install the unit in a dry electrical area with airflow around the case, such as a protected DC distribution space, an equipment locker or a battery compartment area away from spray. Do not treat these open-terminal converters as washdown or bilge-mounted equipment.

Connection hardware and cable sizing need to match the output current. Faston versions suit compact low to medium current wiring, while the M6 bolt and binding post versions give a more appropriate termination point for larger conductors used on the 25A and 80A configurations.

Use cases on board

This range fits boats that carry mixed-voltage DC equipment, such as a 24V house bank feeding 12V electronics or a 12V system that needs a 24V supply for a specific load. It is a practical match for cruising boats, workboats and fishing boats where electronics, lighting, pumps or control gear need a stable DC voltage from a different onboard battery system.

Maintenance and care

After installation, keep the terminals tight and free of corrosion, and check that cooling openings stay clear. On fan-assisted configurations, leave space around the unit so warm air can move away during high-current operation.
