Overview
The Hella Marine Slim Line Square is a recessed-mount LED courtesy light that adds low-level white light in places like steps, companionways, cockpit side decks, and toe-kick areas where you want better footing without lighting up the whole cabin.
It installs through a 1.97 in (50 mm) cutout and fits behind panels with a shallow 0.63 in (16 mm) mounting depth, with a 2.36 in (60 mm) square face on the finished side. The housing is IP67 sealed for wet lockers and washdown-prone areas, and power draw stays under 0.5 W.
Wiring is straightforward with 120 mm of pre-wired single-core marine cable, so terminations can be made behind the liner or inside cabinetry instead of at the light.
Key features
- Recessed square footprint: 2.36 in (60 mm) face, 1.97 in (50 mm) cutout, 0.63 in (16 mm) mounting depth.
- IP67 completely sealed for damp zones, spray, and routine washdowns.
- Very low power consumption: under 0.5 W (under 0.042 A at 12 V, under 0.02 A at 24 V).
- Pre-wired with 120 mm of single-core marine cable for clean behind-panel connections.
- UV resistant enhanced impact acrylic lens to handle sun exposure and bumps in tight walkways.
- UV resistant plastic rim with a chrome-plated finish for a bright trim look without metal corrosion concerns at the bezel.
- Dimmable when used with Hella Marine dimmer 5XA 998 572-001.
Variants
This light is offered in multiple voltage configurations to match common onboard DC systems.
The form factor and installation footprint stay the same; the difference is the rated supply voltage and the associated current draw.
- 980580571: 12V version. Intended for 12 V DC lighting circuits, with current draw under 0.042 A at 12 V.
- 980581571: 24V version. Intended for 24 V DC distribution, with current draw under 0.02 A at 24 V.
What’s included
- Slim Line Square courtesy lamp with 120 mm pre-wired cable
- Stainless steel mounting screws
Installation and setup
Plan the mounting location so there is at least 0.63 in (16 mm) clearance behind the panel for the lamp body and cable bend. After cutting the 1.97 in (50 mm) opening, dry-fit the light, mark the screw holes, and fasten it in place. If you cannot cut a recess, surface-mount accessory rings can be used to adapt the install to flat panels.
Electrical and dimming
Match the lamp voltage to your boat’s DC system (12 V or 24 V). Connect it to a switched, fused lighting circuit and keep splices protected from moisture, especially in cockpit lockers and stairwells. If you want the output lower at night, the lamp can be dimmed using Hella Marine dimmer 5XA 998 572-001.
Use cases on board
This is a good fit for boats that need subtle wayfinding light in high-traffic areas, including coastal cruisers, sportfishing boats, and performance sailboats where people move around at night and you want light close to the deck without glare.

International customers are responsible for any customs duties, taxes, and fees charged by the destination country. If these charges are refused and a shipment returns to us, the carrier’s return cost and any re-entry customs fees will be deducted from the refund. Quality Boat Parts is a reseller. Many items include a manufacturer’s warranty, and all warranty service is handled directly by the manufacturer. We do not manage or administer warranty claims on behalf of customers.
Warranty terms, coverage, and duration are set by each manufacturer. Issues involving defects, repairs, or replacements must be addressed with the manufacturer’s support team. When available, the warranty period is listed on the product page. If it is not shown, contact us or the manufacturer for details before purchasing.
To start a claim, the customer must contact the manufacturer and follow their process. Keep your proof of purchase and original packaging, and register the product if the manufacturer requires it, as these are often needed for warranty service.
We are happy to help you find the right contact or documentation, but we cannot decide outcomes or intervene in claim resolutions. For guidance, email cs@qualityboatparts.com.
