Overview

The Victron Energy Phoenix Inverter 12/375 VE.Direct is a compact inverter for 12V battery banks that supplies either 230V AC or 120V AC, depending on the outlet version selected. It is built for small onboard AC loads where a full inverter charger is not needed, such as charging electronics, running light tools, powering small galley appliances, or keeping cabin equipment available away from shore power.

The 12/375 size is rated at 375W continuous output at 25°C, 300W at 40°C, and 600W peak output for 2 seconds. The unit uses screw-terminal DC connections, accepts cable up to 10 mm² or AWG8, and has an IP21 enclosure with a steel chassis and blue plastic cover, so it belongs in a dry, ventilated locker, cabin electrical space, or protected helm console rather than a wet bilge or exposed deck area.

VE.Direct communication gives installers access to setup and monitoring through compatible Victron accessories. Low-battery alarm and cut-off levels, dynamic cut-off, ECO mode behavior, output settings, load percentage, voltages, and alarms can be viewed or adjusted as part of a properly planned onboard DC system.

Variants

This range is offered with different AC output and receptacle formats. The 230V AC versions cover IEC, Schuko, AU/NZ, and UK outlet layouts, while the 120V AC versions cover NEMA 5-15R and NEMA GFCI outlet layouts.

The main selection point is the vessel’s AC standard and the outlet style already used on board or required by the installation. The NEMA GFCI version is the UL 458 option in this range; the other versions should be matched to the boat’s regional AC system and the applicable installation practice.

Installation and setup

This inverter should be mounted where air can move around it and where spray, saltwater drips, and direct washdown cannot reach the enclosure. The IP21 rating is useful for protected equipment spaces, but it is not a weatherproof or deck-mounted enclosure.

For a 12V system, cable length and cable size matter because current draw rises quickly as AC load increases. The DC side should be planned with suitable overcurrent protection, clean terminations, and short cable runs where possible to reduce voltage drop and nuisance low-voltage shutdowns.

Electrical and system integration

The VE.Direct port is helpful when the inverter is part of a larger Victron-based electrical system or when the owner wants easier access to operating data. With the correct interface, the installer can review voltage, load, alarm status, and settings without treating the inverter as a black box inside the boat.

A remote on/off connection is supported, which is useful when the inverter is mounted out of sight but needs control from a helm, switch panel, or navigation station. ECO mode can also help on boats where the inverter may remain available for intermittent small loads rather than running at full standby consumption all the time.

Use cases on board

This inverter is a practical fit for coastal cruising boats, fishing boats, small workboats, and sailboats that need modest AC power from a 12V battery bank. It suits protected cabin or console installations where the AC loads are known and kept within the inverter’s rating.

It is not a replacement for a shore power system, generator, or larger inverter charger. It works best when used for selected AC loads and installed as part of a balanced DC electrical system with enough battery capacity for the expected run time.

Maintenance and care

Keep the ventilation path clear and check DC terminals periodically as part of normal electrical inspections. In a saltwater environment, the mounting location should stay dry and free from corrosion buildup, and any signs of heat, loose cabling, or repeated alarm conditions should be corrected before continued use.
