Overview

The Victron Energy ORI481224120 is an Orion-Tr Smart 48/12-20A isolated DC-DC charger that takes a 32-70 VDC input and charges or supplies a 12 V system at up to 20 A, with 240 W continuous output at 40 °C. It suits boats that need controlled charging from a 48 V battery bank or charging source to a 12 V service battery, electronics battery, or auxiliary DC circuit.

This Orion-Tr Smart model uses an adaptive 3-stage charging profile with bulk, absorption, and float stages, and it can also run as a fixed-voltage power supply when set up that way. Built-in Bluetooth allows setup and monitoring through VictronConnect, which is useful when the charger is mounted inside a console, technical locker, or machinery space where direct access is limited.

The isolated design keeps input, output, and case separated by 200 VDC galvanic isolation, which is helpful on vessels where 48 V and 12 V systems need to remain electrically separated. The output voltage is adjustable from 10-15 V, and the unit can be paralleled with additional units when a higher total output current is needed.

Key features
  • Converts a 32-70 VDC input to a 12.2 V nominal output for 48 V to 12 V onboard power systems.
  • Delivers 20 A continuous output at 40 °C, with 240 W continuous output at that temperature.
  • Adaptive 3-stage charging supports lead acid and lithium battery charging when configured for the battery type.
  • Bluetooth setup and monitoring through VictronConnect allows charging parameters, live data, warnings, and alarms to be checked from a phone or tablet.
  • Can be configured as a battery charger or as a fixed-voltage DC power supply.
  • Remote on/off connection allows control from a low-current switch, relay contact, or engine-run signal.
  • Engine shutdown detection helps prevent unwanted discharge of the input battery when the charging source is not active.
  • IP43 protection applies to the electronic components when the unit is mounted with the screw terminals facing downward.
  • Screw terminals accept cable up to 16 mm2, or AWG 6, without requiring special installation tools.
  • Short-circuit protection, high-temperature derating, and parallel operation support practical installation in demanding DC systems.
Electrical and system integration

This charger is a strong match for vessels using a 48 V house bank, propulsion support bank, or other 48 V DC source while still carrying 12 V loads such as electronics, lighting, pumps, instruments, or a smaller auxiliary battery. It gives those 12 V circuits a controlled supply instead of relying on an unregulated step-down connection.

The adjustable 10-15 V output range gives the installer room to match the required charging profile or supply voltage. For battery charging, the correct battery type and charge settings should be configured in VictronConnect before the system is put into service.

Installation and fit

The enclosure measures 130 x 186 x 70 mm and weighs about 1.3 kg, so it can fit in many electrical lockers, helm spaces, or protected technical areas. It should be mounted where airflow is available and where the terminal orientation supports the stated IP protection.

The operating temperature range is -20 °C to +55 °C, with output derating above 40 °C. In an engine room or other warm compartment, cable sizing, fuse placement, ventilation, and access for inspection should be planned carefully as part of the DC installation.

Use cases on board

On a cruising boat, workboat, or fishing vessel with mixed-voltage DC architecture, this charger helps bridge a 48 V source and 12 V equipment without tying the grounds together. It is useful for owners and installers who need a controlled 12 V charging or supply point while keeping the electrical layout clean and serviceable.

Shipping
We ship worldwide from the United States. Rates are calculated at checkout based on destination and package weight. Some items include free shipping, which will show automatically. Not every product is eligible for international shipping; checkout will confirm eligibility. We do not ship to PO Boxes except through USPS, and not all packages qualify.

Processing and dispatch
Most orders are verified, packed, and handed to the carrier within 1 to 2 business days. Some products may need extra handling time or ship directly from the manufacturer. For certain international orders, inventory transfers between warehouses may add time. If any delay is expected, we will let you know the dispatch date.

Delivery and tracking
Deliveries are handled by trusted carriers such as USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL. Estimated arrival times appear at checkout and depend on your location and the service you choose. These are estimates and can be affected by customs or carrier disruptions. A shipping confirmation with a tracking link is emailed when your order ships, and tracking may take up to 24 hours to update. You can also view tracking in your account.

Duties, taxes, and support
International customers are responsible for any customs duties, taxes, and fees charged by the destination country. If these charges are refused and a shipment returns to us, the carrier’s return cost and any re-entry customs fees will be deducted from the refund. If your order is late or you need help, contact cs@qualityboatparts.com and we will assist you.

Quality Boat Parts is a reseller. Many items include a manufacturer’s warranty, and all warranty service is handled directly by the manufacturer. We do not manage or administer warranty claims on behalf of customers.

Warranty terms, coverage, and duration are set by each manufacturer. Issues involving defects, repairs, or replacements must be addressed with the manufacturer’s support team. When available, the warranty period is listed on the product page. If it is not shown, contact us or the manufacturer for details before purchasing.

To start a claim, the customer must contact the manufacturer and follow their process. Keep your proof of purchase and original packaging, and register the product if the manufacturer requires it, as these are often needed for warranty service.

We are happy to help you find the right contact or documentation, but we cannot decide outcomes or intervene in claim resolutions. For guidance, email cs@qualityboatparts.com.
