Overview
The Victron Energy ORI121217050 is an Orion XS 12/12-50A DC-DC battery charger for charging a 12V service battery from a 12V starter battery or alternator source. It is a good fit for boats that need controlled alternator charging for house batteries, especially where space is tight and the charger may be mounted near an engine room, battery compartment, or electrical panel.
This unit supports a 9-17V input range and an adjustable 10-17V output range, with input and output current settings from 1A to 50A. At a typical 14V charging voltage, it delivers up to 700W of continuous output power up to 40°C with proper cooling, so it can handle serious service-bank charging without taking over the installation space.
Bluetooth Smart and the VictronConnect app make setup and monitoring straightforward, while VE.Direct and VE.Smart Networking allow the charger to work as part of a broader Victron system. The IP65 housing, fanless construction, and compact 137.3 x 123.1 x 40mm size make it practical for marine electrical installations where dust, spray, heat, and vibration are part of daily use.
Key features
- 12/12-50A DC-DC battery charger for charging a 12V service bank from a 12V starter battery or alternator source.
- Adjustable 1-50A input and output current settings help match charging demand to the alternator and battery bank.
- Up to 700W continuous output at a typical 14V charge voltage, with up to 98.5% efficiency.
- Bluetooth Smart support allows setup, monitoring, and output voltage adjustment through the VictronConnect app.
- VE.Direct port supports integration with compatible Victron GX devices, including DVCC when firmware requirements are met.
- VE.Smart Networking can receive wireless voltage, temperature, and current sense data from compatible Victron devices.
- IP65 protection helps the housing cope with dust and water exposure in demanding onboard locations.
- Fanless cooling reduces noise and avoids the extra failure point of a cooling fan.
- Screw terminals accept cable up to 4AWG, giving installers room for properly sized conductors on higher-current DC runs.
Installation and setup
The charger should be mounted vertically on a non-flammable surface with the power terminals facing downward. Leave at least 10cm of free space around the unit so heat can move away from the housing, especially in lockers, engine spaces, or enclosed electrical compartments where airflow may be limited.
Mounting close to the battery helps reduce voltage drop, but it should not be installed directly above a battery where gassing could affect the electronics. Cable sizing, overcurrent protection, and routing should be planned for the current setting, cable length, and the layout of the boat’s DC system.
Electrical and system integration
The Orion XS can be configured for different battery charge profiles, including common lead-acid and lithium setups. The adjustable output voltage and current control make it useful when upgrading an older split-charge arrangement to a more controlled charging system for modern house batteries.
For Victron-based systems, Bluetooth setup is useful for standalone installations, while VE.Direct gives a clean path into a GX monitoring environment. VE.Smart Networking can also improve charging accuracy by using shared sensing data from compatible Victron battery monitors or sensors.
Use cases on board
This charger suits cruising boats, fishing boats, workboats, and compact refits where the alternator is used to replenish a service battery while underway. It is especially relevant for vessels with electronics, refrigeration, lighting, pumps, or navigation equipment drawing from a separate house bank.
The compact housing and quiet, fanless operation also make it easier to place in real boat spaces where access, airflow, and noise all matter. It gives the installer a controlled charging stage between the engine battery side and the service battery side rather than relying on a simple direct connection.
Shipping
We ship worldwide from the United States. Rates are calculated at checkout based on destination and package weight. Some items include free shipping, which will show automatically. Not every product is eligible for international shipping; checkout will confirm eligibility. We do not ship to PO Boxes except through USPS, and not all packages qualify.
Processing and dispatch
Most orders are verified, packed, and handed to the carrier within 1 to 2 business days. Some products may need extra handling time or ship directly from the manufacturer. For certain international orders, inventory transfers between warehouses may add time. If any delay is expected, we will let you know the dispatch date.
Delivery and tracking
Deliveries are handled by trusted carriers such as USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL. Estimated arrival times appear at checkout and depend on your location and the service you choose. These are estimates and can be affected by customs or carrier disruptions. A shipping confirmation with a tracking link is emailed when your order ships, and tracking may take up to 24 hours to update. You can also view tracking in your account.
Duties, taxes, and support
International customers are responsible for any customs duties, taxes, and fees charged by the destination country. If these charges are refused and a shipment returns to us, the carrier’s return cost and any re-entry customs fees will be deducted from the refund. If your order is late or you need help, contact cs@qualityboatparts.com and we will assist you.
Quality Boat Parts is a reseller. Many items include a manufacturer’s warranty, and all warranty service is handled directly by the manufacturer. We do not manage or administer warranty claims on behalf of customers.
Warranty terms, coverage, and duration are set by each manufacturer. Issues involving defects, repairs, or replacements must be addressed with the manufacturer’s support team. When available, the warranty period is listed on the product page. If it is not shown, contact us or the manufacturer for details before purchasing.
To start a claim, the customer must contact the manufacturer and follow their process. Keep your proof of purchase and original packaging, and register the product if the manufacturer requires it, as these are often needed for warranty service.
We are happy to help you find the right contact or documentation, but we cannot decide outcomes or intervene in claim resolutions. For guidance, email cs@qualityboatparts.com.
