Overview
The Victron Energy ORI124838120 is an Orion-Tr Smart 12/48-8A isolated DC-DC charger for charging a 48V service battery from a 12V starter or alternator source on board. It works with an 8-17V input range and has a 48.2V nominal output, with the output adjustable from 40-60V for the battery profile being used.
This charger uses an adaptive 3-stage charging algorithm for bulk, absorption and float charging, and it is suitable for lead-acid and lithium batteries when configured correctly. Built-in Bluetooth allows setup and monitoring through VictronConnect, which is useful when the charger is mounted inside a console, machinery space, electrical locker or other protected area.
The isolated layout keeps input and output grounds separate, which helps when the starter side and service side of the vessel need to remain electrically separated. Output is rated at 8A at nominal voltage and 40°C, with continuous output power rated at 360W at 40°C and 430W at 25°C.
Key features
- Isolated DC-DC charging separates the input and output grounds for cleaner integration between starter and service battery circuits.
- 12V input range of 8-17V supports alternator-fed charging from a 12V starter battery system.
- 48.2V nominal output with a 40-60V adjustable output range for matching the charging profile to the battery bank.
- Adaptive 3-stage charging covers bulk, absorption and float stages for lead-acid and lithium battery installations.
- Built-in Bluetooth allows configuration, monitoring, history checks and alarm viewing through VictronConnect.
- Remote on/off input reduces the need for a high-current switch in the main input wiring.
- Engine running detection helps prevent unwanted discharge of the starter battery when the alternator is not charging.
- IP43 protection for the electronic components applies when the unit is installed with the screw terminals facing downward, with IP22 protection at the connection area.
- Screw terminal DC connections accept cable cross-section up to 16 mm² (AWG 6).
- Operating temperature range is -20°C to +55°C, with derating above 40°C.
Electrical and system integration
This charger fits boats that use a 12V engine-start system but need controlled charging for a 48V service battery bank. It is especially useful where direct alternator charging is not appropriate and the service bank needs a regulated charge profile rather than a simple voltage feed.
The output voltage can also be set as a fixed output through Bluetooth, so the unit can serve as a DC power supply in suitable installations. Multiple units can be connected in parallel when more output current is required, provided the system wiring, protection and battery requirements are planned accordingly.
Installation and fit
Mount the charger in a protected, ventilated electrical space rather than an area exposed to washdowns, standing water or salt spray. The electronic components carry IP43 protection only when the screw terminals face downward, so orientation matters during installation.
The unit uses screw terminals and has a maximum cable cross-section of 16 mm² (AWG 6). Allow space for cable bends, airflow and access to the terminals, especially in compact battery lockers or behind helm panels where service access can be tight.
Use cases on board
This unit is a strong fit for cruising boats, fishing boats and workboats that are adding a 48V service bank while keeping a 12V starter battery and alternator arrangement. It also suits refits where Bluetooth setup is helpful because the charger will be mounted out of sight but still needs routine checking during commissioning and seasonal maintenance.
For best results, match the charge settings to the battery manufacturer’s requirements and size the wiring, overcurrent protection and ventilation for the expected current and installation environment.
Shipping
We ship worldwide from the United States. Rates are calculated at checkout based on destination and package weight. Some items include free shipping, which will show automatically. Not every product is eligible for international shipping; checkout will confirm eligibility. We do not ship to PO Boxes except through USPS, and not all packages qualify.
Processing and dispatch
Most orders are verified, packed, and handed to the carrier within 1 to 2 business days. Some products may need extra handling time or ship directly from the manufacturer. For certain international orders, inventory transfers between warehouses may add time. If any delay is expected, we will let you know the dispatch date.
Delivery and tracking
Deliveries are handled by trusted carriers such as USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL. Estimated arrival times appear at checkout and depend on your location and the service you choose. These are estimates and can be affected by customs or carrier disruptions. A shipping confirmation with a tracking link is emailed when your order ships, and tracking may take up to 24 hours to update. You can also view tracking in your account.
Duties, taxes, and support
International customers are responsible for any customs duties, taxes, and fees charged by the destination country. If these charges are refused and a shipment returns to us, the carrier’s return cost and any re-entry customs fees will be deducted from the refund. If your order is late or you need help, contact cs@qualityboatparts.com and we will assist you.
Quality Boat Parts is a reseller. Many items include a manufacturer’s warranty, and all warranty service is handled directly by the manufacturer. We do not manage or administer warranty claims on behalf of customers.
Warranty terms, coverage, and duration are set by each manufacturer. Issues involving defects, repairs, or replacements must be addressed with the manufacturer’s support team. When available, the warranty period is listed on the product page. If it is not shown, contact us or the manufacturer for details before purchasing.
To start a claim, the customer must contact the manufacturer and follow their process. Keep your proof of purchase and original packaging, and register the product if the manufacturer requires it, as these are often needed for warranty service.
We are happy to help you find the right contact or documentation, but we cannot decide outcomes or intervene in claim resolutions. For guidance, email cs@qualityboatparts.com.
